YERRANDERIE WILDERNESS (NSW) 4WD EXPEDITION

The Expedition 

The Blue Mountains West of Sydney contain some of the most awe inspiring scenery in NSW. The sheer cliffs of Kanangra Walls regularly feature in tourism promotional films and travel brochures, and the rugged terrain provides great opportunities for four wheel drivers to exploit the capabilities of their vehicles. Add to this the opportunity to explore long forgotten ghost towns.

The trip commences on the Southern highlands in the picturesque town of Mittagong. Then the notoriously dangerous Wombeyan Caves road is followed for its entire length. Although this is a road that requires extreme care it remains one of the most spectacular drives in Australia, with stunning scenery.

Little-used 4WD trails then lead us to our first ghost town, Yerranderie. This is an ideal spot for an overnight camp, and it's worth taking time to soak up the history of the old silver town. More four wheel driving past plunging waterfalls leads us to the incredible mountain scenery of the Kanangra Walls.

Our route then passes right by the Jenolan Caves, through Oberon and on to Bathurst. The second chapter of the route once again has us following a spectacular trail beside the Macquarie River. This is known as the Bridle Track, and it culminates at Hill End where gold once made many men rich and broke the hearts of even more.

History

The ghost towns of Yerranderie and Hill End have very much to talk about in the pasts. Yerranderie was established following the discovery of silver and lead ore in 1871. The town, like most mining towns, flourished quickly and a population in excess of 2000 scratched an existence from the rugged hillsides of the southern Blue Mountains. A small town grew and prospered whilst the precious metals were plentiful. But, as with all mining towns, once the major deposits had been taken from the ground, and further extraction became progressively more expensive, the miners began to move on.
